The eagle peacefully soaring up the sky above a serene town symbolizes my artistic freedom I enjoy, and the wooden block pierced with steel nails make a dramatic contrast to the eagle.  And the wooden block symbolizes the obstructed freedom and pressure I feel as a senior who is given to complete many tasks in and out of school.  But this work contains some hopeful message: one day the eagle will break free from its obstacle and will transcend the barriers.

Medium:  Clay
Size:  12 x 7 x 2
Date:  Mar, 2010
I wanted to express the eco-friendly motives that I have in my philosophy behind architectural works through this piece.  The terracotta made from earthenware and all the leaves and the welcoming hands symbolize my effort and future effort in architecture to host eco-safe ideas in building houses and structures

6. hand I: Versatility

Medium:  Conte, Penceil, Color pencil, Marker
Size:   17 x 13
Date:  Mar, 2010
The piece shows five hands, each designed in distinctive styles.  Pencil, color pencils and markers were used. Each hand are unrealistically portrayed such as the one on top right that shoots different beams with each finger.  Hand is always interesting object because it is the symbol of versatility of an artist.  And I want to portray my hands in many different forms and in different colors to tell that my hands are very versatile in capturing essence of what I observe from the nature around me.

This is a self-portrait.  Outlines are done with pencil and the hues and shades are done with pastels. This is a parodied work of Mount Rushmore. The faces of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were drawn to look more like real human faces than sculpted rocks. And the faces of Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt were replaced with two self portraits which are in angles similar to the ones of actual Jefferson and Roosevelt sculptures.

12. Building with Tree Trunk

Medium:  Color pencil, Water color
Size:   20 x 16
Date:  Sep,  2010
This piece is sketched out with pencil and water color for the background.  This is more of a symbolic piece that portrays a nailed tree trunk that seems to be out of place in the piece.  The trunk represents the destruction and torturing of trees being used as a medium for building houses. The duplicity of tree’s portrayal as a column and its usage as a façade of the building represent the metaphoric representation of my inner-self obstructed from freely expressing my thoughts due to very rigid social structure existing in Korean society.

13. Building I

Medium:   Pencil

This piece is inspired by a photograph of a well-designed interior of an architect. 2009. The trees in the back, hues of the wood and a pool of water are elegantly harmonized with the architectural steel beams and frames. This piece well epitomizes the blending of nature and modern architectural techniques.

19. Time and Space

Medium: Foam board,  Fishing gut,  Stone-spray,  Black-spray
Size:   18 x 10 x 6
Date:  Aug, 2009
I’ve always found the architectural structure of Korean traditional sundial
to  be fascinating ; sundial visualizes the flow of time with the position of
shade. The fact that time parameter, which is somewhat a vague concept, can
be presented visually with the aid of architectural invention inspired me to
work on this topic. First, I created three layers of flat zone that represents
space.’ Then, I positioned the triangular planes which will create shades in
different directions. Lastly, I attached disheveled fishing gut on top of
triangular planes in order to implicitly portray the flow of time. As I
attempted to delineate the significance of time and space in this piece, I
entitled this as “A space-time continuum.”

20. Opening a can

Medium:   Pencil
Size:   19 x1 3
Date:  Dec, 2010
I wanted to visually and understandably illustrate the process of opening
a canned fruit with a manual can opener. Drawing the actual hands opening
makes the motion more alive and realistic.

21.objects for Watching and objects in view

Medium:   Color pencil
Size:   17 x 12
Date:  Aug, 2010
This piece is an illustration of a tropical aquarium and silhouettes of the
viewers outside the glass wall. Whitening streams of line with an eraser

ink stone use in Korean calligraphic traditions.

23. White Elephant

Medium:   Pencil
Size:   17 x 1 2
Date:  Mar,  2009
This piece is a pencil drawing of four arcs abandoned on desert hills.
The combination of huge arcs, desert and a cloudy sky give a sense
of  loneliness. Also, the arcs represent huge and majestic objects but also
obsolete and needless remains ; they are noticeable colossus but are no
longer useful like a white elephant.

24. Rhythm of Life

This piece is a pencil drawing of ceiling  decorations.
The decoration pieces represent the wave incessantly lapping in my life.
The rhythm does not make me boring and gives me anticipation in my life.
